vBulletin v IPB – The Final Chapter

As some of you know I bought a site database. The site vBnt.net was a vbulletin site. I was going to convert it to IPB. Problem was it wouldn’t convert. I have done my share of vbulletin to IPB conversions, over 20 in fact, for myself and clients and this is the first time I could not work through the conversion issues so I just upgraded to the latest stable release of vbulletin, version 4.1.1.

What I have found so far. vBulletin is a far inferior product. There is just so much wrong with it compared to IPB I don’t know where to start.

xenForo Test Site Set Up

I bought a copy of xenForo when it first went on sale. I had it setup on my test server. During my server upgrades and general network maintenance window I upgraded the test server and took the old one offline. I moved the test site to one of the production server. That didn’t go well.

xenForo would not run. 500 errors for everything I did. I tried to upgrade it to xenForo RC 1 and while the installer recognized the xenForo database it didn’t give an option to upgrade. I could only do a clean install.

vBulletin is the software of choice for thousands of communities. vBulletin began its life in April of 2000 when John Percival and Jelsoft released the first version. Since that time it has surpassed Ultimate Bulletin Board (UBB) as the defacto forum package.
