Server 2008R2 File Services Issue

Hi,

I have discovered a weird issue with file services on Server 2008R2 64 bit datacentre [although it could be on any windows 2008 server]

We have a data server that is setup for home drives and staff folders. each user has a homedrive shared as firstname.lastname$ and the users workstations map drive P to \\server\firstname.lastname$

What I have noticed is that I can map a network drive to anything on that server regardless of whether it is a real share or not.

For example net use u: \\server\sharedoesntexist will actually map a drive U to nowhere. The U drive shows up as an 80Gb FAT partition but you can't save anything there. Now this normally wouldn't be a problem except that when staff logon they have their P drives mapped to \\server\firstname.lastname$. If for some reason this drive doesn't connect to the real location it connects to a virtual \\server\firstname.lastname$. The issue I have is that I redirect all users My Documents to this share and because it isn't physically connected to the right place it tells me everything is corrupt. I can usually fix it by removing the drive P and then remapping it again.

I have tried mapping a drive to another server that doesn't have file services installed net use \\server2\bogusshare and it correctly responds that this share doesn't exist. Any idea why file services allows users to connect to a bogus share?

I installed the server software including domain, active directory and dns service.

The problem is when I boot the system it takes about 30 min. to start up, is this normal ???

O by the way when I look at my system info it says OS=32bit
I thought that the server comes only in 64 bit ? now I'm realy confused.

Download Microsoft Url Rewrite Module 2.0 For Iis 7 - Rc

URL Rewrite Module 2.0 provides a rule-based rewriting mechanism for changing requested URL’s before they get processed by web server and for modifying response content before it gets served to HTTP clients.

Microsoft URL Rewrite Module 2.0 for IIS 7 RC is an incremental release that includes all the features from version 1.1, and adds support for rewriting of request and response headers as well as response content. More specifically, it can be used to:

  • Replace the URLs generated by a web application in the response HTML with a more user friendly and search engine friendly equivalent.
  • Modify the links in the HTML markup generated by a web application behind a reverse proxy.
  • Fix up the content of any HTTP response by using regular expression pattern matching.
  • Modify HTTP request headers and IIS server variables.
  • Modify HTTP response headers
The installation package includes several additional components and hotfixes required by URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta. Refer to the KB articles for the hotfixes to get more details. In order to apply the hotfixes correctly without restarting the server, it is recommended that the WAS service is stopped before installing URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta. The following hotfixes will be installed with URL Rewrite Module 2.0 Beta:
  • Update for IIS 7.0 FastCGI module (KB 954946);
  • Hotfix for IIS 7.0 SetUri function (KB 949172)
  • Hotfix for ASP.NET System.Web.dll (KB 957660

Windows Xp Does Not Connect To Webdav Space

Hello,

I have a W2k8 Ent SP2 server running a default website. The server is a domain member and the website is running under a certificate (protocol bindings https, 443) and uses Digest Authentication. Under this website severall virtual folders exists, each with their own 'Authorisation Rules'.

So far so good. (Test) users can access the main login page en will get, based on their groupmembership, acces to an virtual folder. I have severall testusers. They all connect to the webserver and get access to their virtual directorie. This works like an charm.

The problem:

One of the virtual directories is created as a webdav area. From the webserver itself I can connect to this area (net use * https://fqdn/test) using the login of a test user. The drive is created and the user can browse the folder and create or delete files.

However:

Creating the same drive under Windows XP Prof (version 2002) SP3 using 'add a network place' (https://fqdn/test) gives me the message "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another'...

And:

If I try from the cmd box (of the Windows XP box) 'net use * https://fqdn/test' I get the respons: 'System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found.' (this xp computer is NOT a member of the NT domain)

But:

From the XP box(es) I can ping the FQDN and even the alias for it (without the www. in it)

I'm kind of lost here... I have looked on severall website's and fora but did not find any working solution (has this to do with the StrictNameChecking?).

Thanks in advance for reading this, kind regards,
